How the Utah draw works

Limited-entry and once-in-a-lifetime hunts use bonus points. General-season deer uses preference points. Here is the short version.

Step 1

Apply or buy a point

Apply for a hunt in the spring window, or apply for a point only. Each year you apply and miss, you gain a point.

Step 2

Half go to top points

On limited-entry and once-in-a-lifetime hunts, half the permits go to the applicants holding the most bonus points.

Step 3

The rest are random

Everyone left gets one random number for this year plus one per bonus point. Your lowest number counts.

Real example, 2026

Book Cliffs archery elk (Bitter Creek/East, EB3160) had 21 resident permits. 11 went to the top point holders, 9 to 12 points. The other 10 were drawn at random, and 3 of those went to hunters holding just 1 point.
